Physicians’ Approaches to Combating Antimicrobial Resistance: Evaluation of Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices

  01 April 2026

This cross-sectional study assessed knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among 99 physicians in a state hospital in Aydın, Türkiye. While physicians generally recognized AMR as a national issue (90.9%) and demonstrated moderate knowledge (48.5%) and positive attitudes (51.5%), only 57.7% showed adequate prescribing practices. Notably, awareness of local resistance patterns was low, and many did not perceive AMR as a significant problem within their own hospital. Training on rational antibiotic use was associated with better knowledge, and more experienced physicians demonstrated stronger practices. Overall, the findings highlight important gaps between awareness and implementation, emphasizing the need for continuous education, improved access to local resistance data, and strengthened hospital-based antimicrobial stewardship programs.
